This time I had to travel quite far away, to Singapur, to participate in the congress UROFAIR. My role was to perform a GreenLight Enucleation procedure that was broadcasted to the congress. The Surgeries took place at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

There were other international colleagues in the congress and it was very nice to be able to share time with them. Specially Dr. James Porter, an international expert in Robotic retroperitoneal surgery who I admire for being such a good surgeon.

I was very impressed by Singapur, very modern and futuristic, the hospitality of my Singaporean colleagues was spectacular.

This time I went to Oporto to participate in a meeting with Portuguese urologists interested in the treatment of BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia) with lasers. This took place in the University Hospital Fernando Pessoa in Gondomar, near Porto, where I demonstrated the en bloc enucleation technique with two kinds of lasers, the GreenLight and the Holmium laser. The course was wonderfully organized by Dr. Fabio Almeida and the Hospital was excellent, with a very modern and interesting design.
I liked to see that the anatomic vaporization technique that I described in 2014 is becoming widespread and even announced in the hospital.

It was very nice to interact with the portuguese colleagues in this course. It is the first time that I demonstrate live the use of two lasers in the same congress. I think it is a very interesting format to be able to appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of both lasers in each step of the operation. At the end, the important aspect is to achieve an anatomic technique that guarantees the total removal of the adenomatous tissue.

This time I went to Holand to participate in the yearly meeting of laser users of the Netherlands.

My role was to give a talk on the evolution of the endoscopic prostatectomy techniques with the GreenLight laser. I spoke on the development of anatomic vaporization as well as GreenLEP (Greenlight enucleation of the prostate).

It was a short trip, I flew forth and back in the same day. It was good to see old friends.

Today we received visitors to our operating room again, to our monthly course on GreenLight laser. This time we received the visit of Dr. Felipe Cáceres and Dr. Pedro Cabrera from Hospital NISA in Madrid and Dr. Emilio Izquierdo from Hospital Morales Meseguer in Murcia, Spain.

They could learn about the anatomic vaporization technique as well as see some GreenLEP (GreenLight Enucleation of the Prostate) cases.

It is always a pleasure to share with urologists from other countries the techniques that we developed to optimize the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia with laser.

This year the National Urology Congress took place in Gijón, Asturias. My role in the congress was to lecture the residents with a talk entitled "Endoscopic Enucleation of the Prostate, the new treatment of choice of BPH".

I also contributed with three posters, that were presented by my colleague and friend Dr. Enrique Rijo.

But without doubt, the most beautiful moment in the congress was the award from the Spanish Urological Association of the Francisco Diaz Medal to Dr. Richard Gaston. This is the highest recognition the Spanish Urological Association gives to urologists that contribute significantly to spanish urology.

It was a true honor to accompany him in such an important moment. Dr. Gaston confessed that he was truly moved by this and that he had donated the economic prize to a humanitarian organization. He is a great man and an amazing surgeon. My master and friend, Richard. Congratulations!

And with the national congress the academic year comes to an end, although we still have to work the rest of june and july before the summer holiday comes.

We proudly receive this prize to initiatives for humanization of medicine granted by the Medical Council of Madrid. It is to honor our protocol for personalized attention of the patient. A great recognition for the work our team at ICUA as well as the staff from Clínica CEMTRO do every day for the care of our patients.

We were pleased to receive the visit of German urologists to our operating room. They were interested to see anatomic vaporization and endoscopic enucleation of the prostate with the GreenLight laser (GreenLEP).

We received the visit of Dr. Hannes Cash, from Hospital Charité de Berlín and Dr. Dr. Maurizio Aragona from Klinikum Lüneburg

As always it was a true pleasure to share with our colleagues what we do in our operating room on a daily basis.

This time we celebrated in Madrid the National GreenLight Meeting, with a programme packed with talks and surgeries.

We enjoyed the participation of international faculty of prestige.

We enjoyed the talks of Dr. Giovanni Ferrari, Dr. Luca Cindolo, and Dr. Franc Bruyere, from France. A very interesting date commenting the advantages of the new advanced techniques, anatomic vaporization of the prostate and GreenLEP, over the classic vaporization technique.

We enjoyed a great day sharing knowledge and experiences with other urologists who are users of the GreenLight laser throughout the country and who want to improve their technique and results.

This time I went to Modena, Italy, to participate at a live surgical session during the ESUT 2018 Congress. My role was to demonstrate the GreenLEP technique (GreenLight Laser Enucleation of the Prostate).

The organization of the meeting was impressive as they broadcasted three simultaneous operations and the attendees could use headphones to listen to the discussion of the operation of their liking.

I had 30 minutes to show the technique while I received questions from the moderators of the session.

An espectacular congress with live and semi-live surgeries performed by urology experts from all over the world.

Today we received,  as nearly every month, visitors to our operating room that wanted to learn the new techniques that we use with the GreenLight Laser. This time we received the visit of Dr. Carrecedo, from Hospital Juan Carlos I, Dr. Pablo Navarro from Hospital Carlos Haya and Dr. Gregorio Escribano, from Hospital Gregorio Marañón.

It was a pleasure to host them and share the techniques and details of what we do every day.

Again I went to San Francisco to participate at the American Urology Congress. This year there was no course of Advanced Techniques with the GreenLight laser as previous years.

My contribution this year was with four collaborative works. I am proud to see that the uptake of GreenLEP, the technique for enucleation of the prostate that I described is growing worldwide.

So posters and oral presentations plus another video on how to perform morcellation safely, that was presented by Dr. Enrique Rijo.

As always a very interesting congress full of new stuff. I also had time to see my old friends and to enjoy San Francisco a little.

Today I went to the Hospital de La Princesa in Madrid, where I trained as a resident many years ago, to help my colleagues to start their experience with HoLEP or Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate.

We did two cases that went very well. My nurses Vanesa and Sandra came with us to make sure everything went well. The HoLEP procedure is quite simple and safe, but it needs very good team work to succeed.

It was a pleasure to operate in the operating room were I learnt so much as a resident and to see the last three urologists who remain from my time as a resident.

Again we celebrated another course at ICUA - Clínica CEMTRO in Madrid, where we received foreign visitors interested in learning the advanced techniques with GreenLight laser that I described now some years ago, that have been adopted in many european countries.

We had two important invited professors, Dr. Vincent Misrai, from Tolousse, France, and Dr. Giovanni Ferrari, from Modena, Italy.

Dr. Misrai performed an anatomic vaporization and then I did a GreenLEP (GreenLight Enucleation of the Prostate) that was broadcasted to our main auditorium. Our Fellow. Dr Giusseppe Saita, moderated the session.

We also did some talks in between surgeries.

The following day we continued during the morning and the attendees had also an opportunity to use the wonderful surgical simulators developed by Boston Scientific.

In sum, another successful course, we are always happy to try to propagate the knowledge on these techniques and to help other colleagues to adopt these modern techniques for the benefit of their patients.

This year the EAU took place in Copenhagen. A congress full of new and interesting stuff.

I was first in charge of addressing the Young Urologists Group of the EAU with my talk on Tips and Tricks for HoLEP (Holmium Enucleation of the Prostate).

Then I was invited to present a semi-live surgery of Anatomic PVP (Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate) during the plenary session of the congress.

Later that day I recorded an interview for a new education website on BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) that Boston Scientific is going to release soon, similar to the one they have been running for stone disease  http://stonesmart.urologytimes.com/. I spoke about the GreenLEP technique that I have described for the treatment of large glands. I will announce it in this blog the moment in comes online.

Also in this congress I presented a live surgery recorded previously at the Boston Scientific Booth.

This video will soon be available at the prestitious AIS Channel, I will also announce it here when it becomes available online.

Also I had to moderate a session of videos on new techniques in the treatment of BPH.

In this session we phad submitted a video on how to perform intravesical morcelation of BPH tissue with safety, that Dr. Enrique Rijo presented. He is a colleague and a friend from Barcelona who learnt to enucleate with me and has grown up to become a true expert.

Finally I presented another video that we had submitted to the congress on Robotic Nephrectomy in a tumor with caval thormbus.

In summary, a very busy congress in which I have been able to ascertain that we are in line with other european high level centers offering the latest technologies in minimally invasive surgery to our patients.

ICUA and Clínica CEMTRO have initiated their participation in the international multicenter clinical trial on the new device iTIND for the treatment of BPH and Marion's disease (primary sclerosis of the bladder neck).

The advantage of this device that is implanted in the prostatic urethra and is removed five days later is that it reshapes the anatomy of the bladder neck allowing for a much more comfortable micturition for patients without affecting ejaculation or sexual function.

We have carried out the first cases for the study and the recruitment is still open, so if you suffer from BPH contact us to see if you are a candidate to participate in this study.
